What are Mardi Gras Doubloons?

Mardi Gras doubloons are tokens that are thrown or given out by krewe member to celebrate the krewes theme that year. Most common doubloons are made of aluminum, however they can be made of wood, copper, brass, bronze, silver, and other materials. They were invented by Herbert Alvin Sharpe for the krewes to throw at crowds at Mardi Grass parades. In 1960 The Krewe of Rex was the first krewe to throw doubloons. Besides, the parades krewes can have doubloons for balls, and other parties. Doubloons have been made for other holidays, celebrations, organizations, politicians and businesses.

What are the different types of doubloons?

There are many different types of doubloons. Aluminum, wood, and poker chips are made mostly for throwing at parades, while copper, brass, bronze, and silver are made to be given out. Most doubloons are round in shape however they now come in different shapes and sizes.

Aluminum Mardi Gras doubloons come in different colors. Most doubloons are only one color but there are duals and laminate. Duals have one base color and one selected color. Laminate doubloons have a coating applied to one side to give it color.

The copper, brass, bronze, and silver doubloons are considered as heavy. The heavy doubloons can also come in antique bronze, ox silver, tri-color, muti color, and cutout. Most antique bronze, and ox silver doubloons are made by applying a coating, usually to a bronze doubloon. Tri-color doubloons are made of three colors while muti color doubloons have more than three colors.

What shapes are doubloons?

Round is the most command shape of doubloons but. they have come in different shapes. The different shapes such as oval, hexagonal, octagon, scalloped, cut out, and many other shapes are possible.
